Parents Are Your Customers

If there are no parents, there are no kids, and that means no MONEY for you.

Parents are not your problem in youth soccer. They are the most important person in the child’s life, which means they are the decision-makers who commits the child to play, and gets them to practice, and to games.

Ultimately, they are the financial engine of their child, the team, and the club. Leagues don’t exist without parents. Without their payments, none of these would exist.

Pick Your Battles

I used to highlight to my parents that I was in charge. I thought the team existed because of the coach. My belief was you pay, drop off your child and let leave me alone. I did not want to hear their suggestions or thoughts. Plus, I would avoid them at every opportunity.

How things can change quickly when you overlook parents’ value. A few confrontations turned out as follows:
1. Parent A became the program director.

2. Parent B ascended to the board of directors.

3. Parent C became the manager of the team and handled all the finances.

Get Them On Board

You need parents on your side to make money.

You need to understand what every parent wants for their child.

  • A family experience – be part of the team, and the club, and have their opinion heard
  • A positive, safe environment – their child is happy
  • Value – their child learns life lesson skills that will benefit them through HS, college, and their career

The best way to deal with your parents is to have a practical solution. Ask for their opinion.
